How about the fact we don't use corn at all. That's right we have a corn less corn maze.
In fact we are the first corn maze in the state of Tennessee to use sorghum for our maze instead of traditional maize (aka corn).Sorghum essentially looks just like corn stalks in a cornfield maze, but is actually a grass and doesn’t produce the corn. Sorghum is drought tolerant which is favorable for a fall farm maze because it allows us to use a lot less water for irrigation. Corn mazes are sometimes not as much fun when there has been little to no rain because the stalks will remain short and narrow and the corn doesn’t develop as it should. Sorghum is planted much denser and produces a much taller and thicker stalk even with limited amounts of water. That means the maze is just that much more fun ...imagine not being able to see through the rows at all.
Certain varieties of sorghum can be harvested and processed to make sorghum syrup. This thick, sweet treat is often times compared to molasses. Be sure to stop by our farm market and pick some up to take home with you today.
Farmer Ladd along with a team of other local farmers in our community work together to deliver your family a one-of-a-kind maze experience. Unlike many other corn or sorghum mazes, the Ladd family and neighboring farmers spend months of their time working on the perfect adventure just for your family.
First we have to decide on a design for our sorghum (corn) maze. Once the corn maze design is complete we put it to graph paper planning out our grid so we can cut the paths for you to follow throughout the maze. At the same time we are preparing the soil, adding amendments to ensure the ground is good and fertile and getting the maze site ready for planting. We plant the seeds for our corn maze in early July. We practice no-till farming where the corn is drilled into the ground instead of turning the soil which is a lot healthier for the ground and decreases potential erosion. As soon as the cornfield begins to sprout, we mark off a grid and take precise measurements to lay out our design that mimics the corn maze drawing on the graph paper. Once the maze design has been marked-off we cut the walking trails with a lawn tractor and before you know it we have a living piece of art.
The single most important step to creating our cornfield maze once the seeds are planted is completely out of our control. We must rely on Mother Nature so we monitor the weather and pray for rain, rain and more rain.
Our amazing fall maze is open for exploration and discovery both day and night. See the farm calendar for exact dates and times. The corn maze is much more challenging at night so be sure to bring your flashlight. Although it's fun to spook our friends, when the maze is open to the public the spooking ends. We don't offer a haunted maze at this time.
All children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times to explore the corn maze attraction at Lucky Ladd Farms. There is absolutely no smoking on the farm...for obvious reasons. Groups are welcome, in fact, call ahead for discount pricing with groups of 20 or more.
